Is a drying rack cheaper than a tumble dryer?
Yes — a drying rack costs nothing to run, while a tumble dryer uses roughly 2–4 kWh per load (1–2 kWh for a heat pump model). Multiply that by your electricity rate to get your cost per load. For most households running several loads a week, a rack that costs the price of one or two dryer-heavy months pays for itself quickly.
The honest answer is that the money is only half the comparison. Time, space and indoor humidity are the other half, and they are where dryers earn their keep.
Work out your own number
Energy prices vary too much by country and tariff for a single figure to be useful, so here is the calculation instead:
Cost per load = dryer energy use (kWh) × your electricity rate per kWh
Typical energy use per load:
- Vented dryer — around 3–4 kWh
- Condenser dryer — around 2–3 kWh
- Heat pump dryer — around 1–2 kWh
Find your rate on your electricity bill, multiply, then multiply again by loads per week and by 52. That annual figure is what a drying rack saves you, minus its one-off cost.
Two things that change the maths: heat pump dryers are far cheaper to run but cost more upfront, and drying a load that was spun at 1400 rpm uses noticeably less dryer energy than one spun at 800.
Where the rack genuinely wins
- Running cost. Zero, permanently.
- Clothes last longer. Dryer lint is fabric worn off your clothes. Air drying causes no shrinkage, no fading from heat, and no elastic damage.
- No installation. No vent, no plumbing, no dedicated space. It matters in rentals.
- Handles what dryers cannot — wool, delicates, anything with elastane, trainers, and items where tumble drying voids the care label.
Where the dryer genuinely wins
- Speed. One hour versus twelve to twenty-four. With a family and school uniforms, that is not a small difference.
- No indoor humidity. A vented or condenser dryer removes moisture from the house. A rack releases about two litres of water per load into the room — which is how indoor drying causes condensation and mould if the room is not ventilated.
- Winter and small flats. When outdoor drying is impossible and you have no spare room, a rack means living with damp air.
- Softness. Air-dried cottons stiffen. Tumbling does not.
What most households actually end up doing
Using both, deliberately:
- Rack: shirts, delicates, wool, anything that shrinks, and full loads in summer.
- Dryer: towels, bedding, thick items, and anything needed the same day.
Even split that way, a rack absorbs a large share of loads and cuts dryer running costs substantially — without the winter damp problem of drying everything indoors.
