Where is the washing machine filter?
On most front-loading washing machines the filter is behind a small hinged panel at the bottom front, usually on the right. Top loaders often have no separate drain filter at all — depending on the model, they use a lint trap in the agitator, a mesh screen under the rim, or a self-cleaning pump.
If you have a front loader and have never opened this panel, what you find will not be pleasant. It is also the single most overlooked cause of a smelly machine.
Front loaders: the bottom-front panel
Kneel down and look along the very bottom of the machine. You are looking for a rectangular or square panel roughly 10–15 cm across, usually flush with the fascia. Common variations:
- A small door with a finger recess — pull it open
- A flush panel needing a coin or flat screwdriver in a slot
- A full-width kickplate that clips off, revealing the filter behind
Behind it you will find a round cap you rotate anticlockwise, and often a short drain hose tucked alongside.
Top loaders: usually no drain filter
Most top loaders are designed so lint leaves with the wastewater, so there is nothing to unscrew. Depending on age and model, look for:
- A lint trap inside the agitator — the central column may have a removable cap with a mesh basket beneath
- A mesh screen under the rim or clipped to the side of the tub
- Nothing at all — many modern top loaders use a self-cleaning pump
If you cannot find one, check the manual before pulling at anything. On plenty of top loaders there genuinely is no user-serviceable filter.
Open it without flooding the floor
There is standing water behind that cap. Every time.
- Turn the machine off at the wall.
- Lay old towels down and put a shallow tray or roasting dish against the machine — a bucket is too tall to fit under the opening.
- Drain the hose first if there is one. Pull it out, remove its plug, and let it empty into the tray. This is the difference between a tidy job and a wet floor.
- Unscrew the cap slowly, anticlockwise, letting water out gradually.
- Pull the filter out and clear it under a tap.
- Check the empty cavity with a torch and remove anything left in the impeller housing.
- Refit firmly — a loose cap leaks — and run a short rinse to check.
What you will actually find
Lint, hair, tissue pulp, coins, buttons, hair grips, the occasional sock, and dark standing water. If the machine has been in use a year or more without a filter clean, expect a strong smell as you open it. That smell is the one your clothes have been picking up.
How often to clean it
Every three months for most households. Monthly if you have pets, wash a lot of towels or bedding, or anyone in the house has long hair.
Signs it is overdue: the machine takes longer to drain, water sits in the drum after a cycle, the spin stage errors out, or clothes come out smelling despite a clean drum.
Once the filter is clear, follow it with a drum cleaning cycle — a cleaning tablet in an empty machine on the hottest setting — to clear what the filter cannot reach.

My machine has no panel at the bottom. Likely a top loader, or a front loader with the filter accessed by removing the kickplate. Check the manual before forcing anything.
Do I need to turn off the water supply? No — just the power. The water in the filter housing is what has already drained from the drum.
The cap will not unscrew. Detergent residue can cement it. Do not use pliers on plastic. Run a hot cleaning cycle, let it cool, and try again.
Can a blocked filter break the machine? It will not usually cause permanent damage, but it strains the pump and causes drain and spin faults. Those are repair-call territory.
